Jim reaches 33 nominations

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

I am delighted to have received the 33 nominations to be on the ballot for Labour leader. I realise this hasn’t been widely reported, mostly due to the anti-Garner bias in the mainstream media, stemming from the time I called Rupert Murdoch “an evil Aussie sorcerer monkey” at a party. To his face. I was quite drunk.

Anyhow, congratulations to the other five candidates. I look forward to an exciting contest over the next few months.Let it be a fair fight.

Let us be free from fear of smear. I’m looking at you, Ed.

My problem with the Hustings

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

You might have noticed that in my behind-the-scenes video I published yesterday, I mentioned that I’d be boycotting the vast majority of leadership candidates hustings debates because I feel they “stifle debate”.

This may not make sense to you, but it’s true. A lot of things don’t make sense but are true. Evolution. Aeroplanes. Lee Evans’ popularity.

At the time of writing, there are 34 timetabled hustings (including the two yesterday). When you have lots of debate, you end up having no debate. You learn each others arguments, your lines become rehearsed; no points are scored, no cock ups are made.

This is why I will be making my hustings appearances few and far between – I will add surprise and excitement, the other candidates will never be sure what I will say and I will be constantly changing my policies, values and beliefs in order to avoid becoming predictable. This is what politics is like now. Have principles, but make them progressive, pragmatic, populus principles. Flexideology. Doing this I feel will mean that the other candidates will be forced to be on their toes, therefore keeping the contest exciting.

And it will all be down to me.

The Jim Garner Movement spreads

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Here are a few other places on the internet I appeared this week:

Total Politics: On Tuesday I was interviewed for lifestyle magazine Total Politics. You can read it HERE.

Labour Uncut: Web guru Jon Bounds wrote an excellent article, praising the way I’ve been using social media. You can read it HERE.

House of Twits: Conducted an interview where I went in to detail on foreign policy, such as dealing with Iran. You can read it HERE.

Guido Fawkes mentioned me in passing, while Political Scrapbook cut short their self-imposed mini-hiatus to blog the news of my announcement.

David Miliband joined the Jim Garner for Labour Leader Facebook group.

Ed Balls said that I was “good… very good”, before having a conversation with me about chocolate.

Ed Miliband said he would vote for me.

And rumour has it Left Foot Forward are preparing to endorse me tonight, despite claims in the past they’d stay neutral throughout. So keep your eyes peeled.

Policy: Discrimination against “eco-kids” must stop

Jim enjoying nature

Since 1997, Britain has become a fairer and more tolerant society. It is not because we ignore our differences, but that we celebrate them.

Part of respect for each other is through the language we use. It is now considered taboo to use derogatory language to describe those of a different race, religion or sexual orientation – in fact, in many cases the taboo culture is backed up by legislation.

However, there is a a type of people who aren’t protected, who have been ignored by the Government for too long.

Enviromentalists.

As Labour leader, I would propose we make it illegal to incite environmental hatred. Environmentalists are growing in number in the UK, with this Parliament seeing its first Green MP elected. No longer would we, who care about our planet, have to endure sneering taunts like “tr** h*gger” and climate change denying right wing bloggers wouldn’t be allowed to capitalise ‘MENTALIST’ when they write the word ‘environmentalist’. It may take some time, as it is a widely accepted form of discrimination (due, in part, to the likes of Jeremy Clarkson), but it is a cause worth fighting. These are the type of progressive thinkers the Labour Party should protect. We must do this.

Join me to diversify

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

Have so far had a fantastic response to my announcement yesterday that I have joined the Labour leadership race, including messages of good luck from Ed Balls and Ed Miliband. Reactions from people have been overwhelmingly positive and I think the grassroots of the Party really appreciate me using social media to try and speak to normal people.

One of the few concerns people have raised is that I am another white man and many feel that the contest still lacks diversity. I disagree. What I have added to this contest already is diversity of thought – I am still the only candidate who has openly talked about the subject of police helmets, something which, once brought to their attention, really worries people.

I’m not going to pretend that Parliament as a whole doesn’t need to reflect society more, it really does. A little known fact is that there are 2.5 million unemployed people in the UK. In the House of Commons, there are none.

Is this right? No.

Are the unemployed being sufficiently represented? No.

Do I have the answer? No. But it’s not always about having the answer right away. It’s about seeing a problem and then trying to find what is causing it. I’m not claiming to have all the solutions to the problems, but at least I’m aware of what the problems are.

Please leave a comment or contact me on Twitter with how you feel we (not I, we) could best tackle this botheration, or other issues you feel are being ignored.
